The Choice is Yours So Choose

We know that nowadays many professionals teach languages, especially English. But what no one tells you is that 90% of these teachers are motivated by “extra income,” “making money,” “filling up classes to increase profit,” or “recording courses so their schedule isn’t too busy.”
And that’s not my opinion.

We participate in several groups of private teachers, and the main topic is always the same: “How can I make more money as a private teacher?”
Honestly, they’re not wrong. Language teaching is highly undervalued in Brazil—but that’s a conversation for another time.

So what does any of this have to do with choosing the right teacher?
Everything.

A teacher’s purpose matters a lot.
Let me show you an example, and you tell me which teacher you would choose. Ready?

Teacher #1

“Hello! My name is Luana, I’m from Curitiba, and I’ll help you speak English fast with private lessons. My classes cost R$150 per month, a great cost-benefit. I use whichever book you feel most comfortable with. I have experience with the English File and the Cambridge. I love English, and that’s why I teach it. I also learned English in Brazil, so I know exactly what difficulties you face.”

Teacher #2

“Hello! My name is Carolina. I’ve been an English teacher for four years. Since my first year teaching, I’ve noticed a significant improvement in my students and how much English can change their lives. When I realized that, I finally understood why I teach English. I want to see my students succeed internationally—or simply enjoy that dream trip to Disney without worrying about language barriers. My classes cost R$509 per month. I’m confident that together we can make your future brighter and less stressful.”

Now, the analysis

Teacher #1 is cheaper and has experience as a student, which can definitely help with classroom struggles (online or in person). She promises to teach you quickly using any book you choose.

Teacher #2 is more expensive, but her value is clearly higher. Why?
Because she’s not just trying to teach you English—she wants to be a tool that helps you grow professionally or finally take that international trip. More than that, she wants to be a bridge to your success, and she genuinely believes in you.

Do you understand now why you shouldn’t look only at the price? Why does choosing well actually matter?

Imagine you spend R$150/month with Teacher #1 for a year (R$1,800 total), reaching an intermediate level using multiple different methods—because she doesn’t really follow a structured methodology, given that she can use any book you choose.

Now imagine one year with Teacher #2 (R$6,108 total), and by the end of it, you’re able to pitch yourself to your dream company confidently. Not only because she helped you develop communication skills, but because her belief in you gave you the courage to send that message, book that call, and present your services.

See the difference?

The choice is yours—so choose wisely.

Tell me in the comments: what’s your take on this?

Now that you understand the difference, let’s talk about it in the comments. And here’s my final question:
Did you study—or would you like to study—at a College or University?
